Wilson questions Better Bin design and maintenance

New York City Council · Oct 15, 2026 · starts 0:46:09 · 1 min 11 sec

Wilson asks whether the Better Bin design is working given broken parts. Anderson says Better Bins have more parts that can break, but DSNY tries to replace individual parts rather than remove the whole basket, and that they work better in some neighborhoods than others.

Carl Wilson

And for the better bins, is the design...

Carl Wilson

How's the design working?

Carl Wilson

Because I feel like I walk around my district and I see them in so many different states.

Carl Wilson

You know, the door is ripped off, the piece is missing off the top.

Carl Wilson

And does that contribute to a removal?

Carl Wilson

And is the design of the Better Bin working out?

Gregory Anderson

So I would say the Better Bins are, they have more parts to them.

Gregory Anderson

So there's more things that could break.

Gregory Anderson

A standard green wire litter basket has exactly one part, and so it either works or it doesn't.

Gregory Anderson

But with the Better Bins, if the top is missing, the great news is it still functions as a litter basket.

Gregory Anderson

It just doesn't look whole.

Gregory Anderson

So we do try to replace individual parts rather than remove the entire basket just because the top is missing.

Gregory Anderson

I will say they work well in some neighborhoods.

Gregory Anderson

They don't work well in others.

Gregory Anderson

They don't work well in places where you have a lot of graffiti and stickers because they act as a magnet for those graffiti and stickers.

Gregory Anderson

And so we try to work with council members to say, here are the pros and cons of this basket versus a green wire litter basket and try to identify the best one for their neighborhood.
