Epstein asks for source of income case numbers and outcomes
Epstein asks how many source of income discrimination cases CCHR handled and how many resolved successfully. Rivera says she will get the numbers, and Kamuf Ward provides FY26 figures of 152 pre-complaint interventions and about 50 filed claims.
So just on the source of discrimination cases, source of income discrimination, how many cases did you handle in the past year?
For source of income discrimination, I will definitely get back to you on those specific numbers.
Yes.
And how many of those resolved successfully where the person actually said they deny me because I have Section 8, you know, you went to the landlord or the broker and said that's illegal and they got the department.
Could we get that data too?
Absolutely can get that data.
Again, I personally oversee that source of income emergency intervention team and knowing the results that we have been able to secure, including someone just last week, we were able to get fully housed with keys in hand, CityFAP's voucher holder, which we're very excited about.
And we're seeing those types of results on a regular basis.
Just so from my office, we get a lot of calls where people have city FEPS or they have a Section 8, and they're going through a thousand places and not getting the ability to get– they get turned down, turned down, turned down.
What I hear is they file complaints and they don't get those issues resolved.
So this is something we're seeing, obviously, as an affordability crisis in our city.
Yeah, 100%.
I just have some of the numbers, so I want to just respond to the questions.
So in pre-complaint interventions in fiscal year 26, 152 of those were lawful source of income
matters where we ultimately, what we call secure a housing opportunity, which can mean, you know, if someone was ghosted, they are able to see the apartment.
If someone was denied an apartment, seeing if there's one available.
And so those cases are definitely a priority.
A complicating factor in source of income is that landlords are attacking the protection itself legally, and there's an ongoing court battle about state lawful source of income protections.
And so we definitely see some housing providers less willing to come to the table for pre-complaint resolution, which requires someone to be willing to speak with us.
But where the pre-complaint intervention is not something that is successful, it moves on to a filed claim.
And we had about 50 of those in the lawful source of income space last year, but definitely a priority for this commissioner and for the assistant commissioner's team.
