Kamuf Ward gives overview of Human Rights Law disability protections
Kamuf Ward says CCHR uses education, outreach, investigations, and litigation to prevent and remedy discrimination. She explains CCHR investigates complaints, resolves matters before formal complaints, and develops Know Your Rights materials.
Today, I'll provide a brief overview of the City Human Rights Law's disability protections, as well as enforcement and outreach.
More details on the specifics are in my written testimony.
CCHR's enforcement includes investigating complaints as well as seeking to resolve matters before a formal complaint is filed where appropriate and securing remedies for violations of the law.
The Commission also provides trainings and develops Know Your Rights and Know Your Obligations materials so that New Yorkers and covered entities understand their rights and responsibilities under the City Human Rights Law.
These functions complement one another.
Community engagement promotes awareness of the law and access to the commission, while our enforcement removes barriers to accessibility and protects the rights of persons with disabilities.
Our engagement and enforcement support the end goals of attaining individual remedies and preventing future discrimination.
