Devin Kim describes raising bioweapon safeguards and being fired
Kim says starting January 2025 he warned that Grok could assist with bombs and bioweapons, his supervisor said AI safety was useless, models launched without safeguards, and he was fired in September 2025 the week he was scheduled to present safety findings; most of the safety team resigned.
Starting in January 2025, I raised concerns that Brock could assist people with the creation of bombs and bioweapons, and I asked for proper bi-risk safeguards.
My supervisor responded that AI safety was useless and that AI would kill us all anyways.
We launched models without those safeguards, despite warnings from me and many other trusted employees.
In August 2025, my supervisor pressured employees to circumvent European safety regulations.
In September 2025, he fired me the same week I was scheduled to present my safety findings to leadership.
And most of the safety team resigned after that.
When a model is unsafe, the first people to know are the employees inside the company.
We see it in the evaluations and in leadership positions months before anyone else finds out.
And right now, those employees have very little
reason to speak up and lots of reasons not to.
