Menin calls for federal standards, compares AI to FDA/FAA/SEC
Menin says NYC can lead on AI safety while federal government fails to act, hopes local legislation spurs national standards, and compares AI oversight to FDA, FAA, and SEC regulation of other industries.
I want to end by saying that at our hearing last week, we showed that New York City has demonstrated to the world that cities can and should take the lead on AI safety.
Our federal government is simply failing to act.
Of course, we would like to see regulation at the federal level, and it is our fervent hope that by putting forward these legislative ideas, that it will ultimately
lead to the federal government coming up with national safety standards and regulations of AI.
Just as I said last week, we do not leave it to the pharmaceutical industry to self-regulate.
We have the FDA.
We do not leave it to the airline industry to self-regulate.
We have the FAA and an independent safety board.
When there are safety concerns, we have the SEC that regulates the financial industry.
With AI, what we are looking for is responsible safeguards to put in place.
New York City has and always will be a leader in addressing the key issues that affect New Yorkers, and AI is simply no different.
I look forward to today's conversation.
