Schulman discusses climate change, outbreaks, and triage under Intro 1094
Schulman says two outbreaks this year and hotter summers linked to climate change make new Legionella approaches necessary, and she plans expert testimony on her bill. Schiff says DOHMH looks forward to discussing how it would triage notifications if Intro 1094 passes.
Since we've had these two outbreaks this year, which is troubling, we're trying to find some new ways to do this.
And we are going to have experts, by the way, that are going to testify to my legislation.
So I assume somebody will be here from DOHMH when they testify.
But somebody's waving to me that they'll be here.
And so we're trying to figure out different ways to get at this because the fact of the matter is because of climate change that
we're going to have more or potentially more Legionella because Legionella grows in warm atmospheres.
And we had a very hot summer last summer.
We had a very hot summer this summer.
So that's what we're trying to do.
So we'll work with you to figure it out, but I think we need to look at new ways to manage this.
If this bill is enacted, how will DOHMH triage the notifications?
Will it change how the agency responds to a notification based off the levels of Legionella found in a cooling tower system?
So we look forward to continuing to discuss the bill with you when we're still thinking.
about those really important questions.
Okay.
