Schulman questions 71% inspection coverage and uninspected restaurants

New York City Council · Oct 19, 2026 · starts 0:27:01 · 1 min 11 sec

Schulman notes the FY2026 Mayor's Management Report says DOHMH inspected 71% of restaurants, below the 100% target. Schiff says about 8,800 restaurants were not inspected in FY26 and just under 500 had gone two or more years without inspection, while the department aims to inspect 100% and continues recruiting.

Lynn C. Schulman

According to the fiscal 2026 mayor's management report, DOHMH inspected 71% of the city's restaurants, roughly the same as in fiscal 2025, below the 100% target.

Lynn C. Schulman

How many restaurants went uninspected in fiscal year 2026, and how many have now gone more than two years without an inspection?

Corinne Schiff

In FY26, there were about 8,800 restaurants that were not inspected and just under 500 that had gone two or more years without an inspection.

Corinne Schiff

And then another set of restaurants where we had attempted an inspection, the restaurant was closed and appeared to be out of business, but we would continue to inspect to confirm that.

Lynn C. Schulman

Do you think you're going to get to a place where it's,

Lynn C. Schulman

95% and higher.

Lynn C. Schulman

I'm just asking.

Corinne Schiff

I mean, that's certainly our goal.

Corinne Schiff

Our goal is to inspect 100%.

Corinne Schiff

I think you quoted 99 point something in your opening remarks.

Corinne Schiff

That is our goal, and we are continuing to recruit and really welcome the council's support to send us good candidates.

Corinne Schiff

It's a great job, a terrific way to serve your community.

Lynn C. Schulman

Give us a job description, yeah, we can do that.
