New York City Council · Oct 19, 2026 · starts 0:25:38 · 1 min 23 sec

Schiff says DOHMH inspected almost 21,400 restaurants in FY26, almost 21,000 in FY25, and just over 20,000 in FY24. She attributes the increase to ongoing recruitment and training of new inspectors.

Lynn C. Schulman

So how many inspections did you guys conduct in each of the last three fiscal years?

Lynn C. Schulman

Do you have that?

Corinne Schiff

So in FY26, we did almost 21,400.

Corinne Schiff

Restaurants inspected, FY25 it was almost 21,000, and in FY24 just over 20,000.

Corinne Schiff

So as you noted in your opening remarks, Chair, our recruitment efforts have been

Corinne Schiff

rigorous and ongoing, and we are succeeding in bringing more inspectors on board, which is why you are seeing those numbers go up.

Corinne Schiff

met a group of new inspectors in training, a nice big group.

Corinne Schiff

So we are continuing to staff up.

Lynn C. Schulman

I'm guessing that you don't have this with you, but if you can give us the number of the type of inspection, including the initial re-inspection compliance and complaint driven.

Corinne Schiff

I don't have complaints, but I have FY26.

Corinne Schiff

There were just over 16,000 initial inspections, almost 6,000 re-inspections, and just over 250 compliance inspections.

Corinne Schiff

And that was up from the year before, 15,000 initial inspections.

Lynn C. Schulman

Okay, great.
