Farias asks about audio/visual announcements and East 34th terminal
Farias notes missed ferries due to yelling; EDC says $75 million is allocated for East 34th redesign and interim barrier removal; wants accessibility at all landings.
Okay, and then just around the signage, I hear you on improvement on signage on language.
We appreciate that.
As I've mentioned in past years, you know, I've been on the 34th Street ferry landing, and I miss my Soundview ferry because they're just yelling out.
Or whispering out, you know, sound view.
So I'm just wondering, are we looking at, besides the bullhorn, besides the yelling out
in some of the areas on the landings, looking at how else we can comprehensively with audio, visual, ASL, like any other ways for folks that have disabilities or have are hearing impaired
can make sure they're not
going to miss their ferry.
For someone like me who's able-bodied and missing my ferry landing stop or ferry stop, I can only imagine what that looks like for our other community members.
Thank you for the question and the comment.
And yes, it is the case that our guest agents are
doing their level best to make it as loud as possible.
But you're absolutely right.
We do see real challenges at East 34th Street.
It's one of the reasons why it was important for us to get funding, which we do have now, about $75 million to reconsider how we can expand and improve pedestrian queuing and vessel access at
East 34th Street.
This is a DOT facility.
We are working in partnership with DOT on this.
We are just starting that process now, but we want to re-envision the entire terminal to make it better for all riders.
One of the things we know is that when you have a strong focus on accessibility up front, it does improve the situation for all riders, and we think that that's incredibly important to have better line management, better information, to have better queue management as we are creating that system.
The other thing we did more recently is that we did a smaller project as an interim measure with DOT to remove some of the barriers that were found on the
on East 34th Street Terminal just to create more space, which has benefited to reduce some of the crowding.
I appreciate the responses.
I'd like to just keep up to date with you folks on what the progress looks like, what other
you folks are looking at to make these more, it's not just East 34th Street, right?
We want to make sure all of the ferry landings have these types of accessibility options for all of New Yorkers, especially Sunset Park, Gracie Mansion area,
Wall Street that are super busy and intersect with other ferries.
So if we can just keep up to date on that, just so I can keep communicating out to community members.
Absolutely.
Thank you.
