Neve Wallace of NYCFC supports Willets Point ferry
The NYCFC communications manager says Etihad Park opens next year and Gotham FC will play there in 2028; ferry service would give fans an alternative to driving and reduce congestion.
Next, we have Nev Wallace, followed by Ricardo Garcia.
Can you hear me?
Yes.
You may begin.
Good afternoon, Chair Maloney, Chair Abreu, and committee members.
My name is Neve Wallace, and I serve as manager of communications at New York City Football Club.
I am delivering this testimony on behalf of Brad Sims, the chief executive officer of New York City Football Club.
The club thanks you for the opportunity to submit testimony in support of Intro 846, legislation that would establish regular public ferry service connecting Willits Point and with Midtown and the Financial District.
The club thanks Councilmember Chanel Thomas-Henry and all of the bill co-sponsors for their commitment to expanding transportation access and connectivity across New York City.
New York City FC is proud to be building Etihad Park in Willits Point.
Once built, it will be New York City's first ever soccer-specific stadium.
In less than a year, Etihad Park will open its doors to New York City FC fans for the first time.
We are also incredibly excited that Gotham FC, the reigning National Women's Soccer League champions, are set to begin play at the stadium in 2028.
The creation of a 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium represents a significant investment in the future of professional soccer in our city.
The stadium's development is part of the broader transformation of Willis Point into a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood, and the club believes that ensuring that the neighborhood is served by a robust, accessible, and diverse transportation network is essential to the community's long-term success.
Intro 846 represents an opportunity to further strengthen that network.
For New York City FC, expanded ferry service would give our
Supporters, another convenient way to get to Etihad Park on match days.
Providing an alternative to driving could also help reduce traffic congestion in the surrounding area, benefiting area residents while making it easier for fans to get to and from matches.
Beyond the benefits to New York City FC, regular ferry service to Willits Point would improve transportation options for Queens residents and support the area's continued growth.
With new housing and businesses coming to Willits Point, additional transit options will be important to making the neighborhood more accessible to residents and visitors alike.
New York City FC looks forward to working with the council, the mayor and his team, and our community partners to advance this legislation and support the continued growth of Willits Point and the beautiful game in New York City.
Thank you for your consideration.
Thank you.
