Menin recounts basketball injury where five 911 calls brought no EMS
Menin describes a 16-year-old in her district who was badly hurt during a basketball game and received no EMS despite five separate 911 calls and a firehouse next door. She says a parent called a private ambulance after 30 minutes and FDNY called back nearly three hours later to ask if an ambulance was still needed.
Residents of my own district actually asked that very question recently, just a few days ago when a 16-year-old was badly hurt during a basketball game.
Despite five separate 9-11 calls, no EMS arrived.
Despite a firehouse actually being next door, no EMS arrived.
30 minutes after the first call, the teenager's parent contacted a private ambulance service because he couldn't wait any longer.
Nearly three hours after the first call, the FDNY phoned back to ask if an ambulance was still needed.
I think, obviously, we're all relieved that his life was not at stake, but this is totally unacceptable.
What if his life had been at stake?
This just cannot continue.
