Q&A

Narcisse asks why nearby engine could not transport injured child

New York City Council · Oct 20, 2026 · starts 1:06:52 · 1 min 16 sec

Narcisse asks about the engine company near a school and whether it could rush a child to the hospital. Esposito says the engine was not assigned because the call was not life-threatening, and even if sent it could not transport and would be tied to the scene.

Mercedes Narcisse

Thank you, Chair.

Mercedes Narcisse

I heard about the engine, like, that was next to where the school, not too far.

Mercedes Narcisse

So what are the steps someone can take, like, in the case of an emergency?

Mercedes Narcisse

Like, you can't, the engine cannot call and say this is an emergency.

Mercedes Narcisse

Let's say if there's a rotation, they can call and say that there is an emergency here.

Mercedes Narcisse

One of us got to run with the child.

Mercedes Narcisse

Is that possible?

John Esposito

In that case where engine 44 is, if they, because it's not a life-threatening call, the engine doesn't get assigned.

John Esposito

Once we was to send them there, even to confirm, but...

John Esposito

Then they would be tied to that scene and they're not able to transport that.

John Esposito

That child needed transportation to the hospital.

John Esposito

The engine's not able to do that.

John Esposito

So they would just be waiting there, and that's why we reserve them for the serious life-threatening calls so they can provide life-saving care until that ambulance gets there.

John Esposito

There's not much that engine could have done for that boy with the broken leg.

Mercedes Narcisse

Got it.
