Narcisse questions H&H on emergency department and bed transfer waits
Narcisse asks H&H about current emergency department wait times and the time to transfer admitted patients to inpatient beds. Dr. Josh Motzquist says the median time to first provider is 29 minutes and the average emergency department-to-bed time is about 270 minutes.
Now, going to H&H.
What are the current average emergency department wait times for H&H citywide?
And how do we compare to the past two years?
Thank you, Chair Narcis.
It's good to see you again, and I appreciate all you do for hospitals and helping us.
The current median arrival time to seeing the first provider is 29 minutes in health and hospitals overall, which is an improvement from previous years of 33 minutes.
How long does it take on average for a patient to be transferred from the emergency department to the inpatient hospital bed?
So that's a great question.
One of the measures we try to track is after the decision is made to admit the patient, how long it takes to get out of the emergency department to bed upstairs.
To the bed.
Right.
And right now that time is on average about 270 minutes.
70?
270 minutes.
200.
I was hoping for 70.
We would all for 70.
I'm just hopeful.
And what do you think is a problem?
I think it's a complex situation.
It depends on what the capacity of the facility is at the time of day, what time of day it is, what resources are available.
It depends how many patients are coming in, how many are being admitted.
Also, getting patients home is also a challenge sometimes, getting patients out the door.
There's a lot of different variables that kind of contribute.
I know there's a lot of different factors.
Can you give me the top one?
The top one, I don't have the top one in front of me.
I'm happy to get that back to you.
But a combination of getting patients out of the hospital and getting patients upstairs all contribute to the overcrowding nature.
