Anthony Griffith says zero-idling enforcement conflicts with bus safety
Griffith says he has been a bus operator for more than 40 years and has trained thousands of drivers. He argues buses must idle to build air pressure and perform safety checks, and he offers to demonstrate the process to officials.
Good afternoon, Chairman and the Council.
My name is Anthony Griffith.
I am a transportation consultant, and I've been a bus operator for over 40 years.
The thing that no one is talking about is the zero idling law, which does not allow any idling at all, which makes it impossible for you to safely operate your vehicle.
There is just no way around it.
We need to build up air pressure.
We need to do a lot of things for passenger safety that's not being taken into consideration.
I've fought many of these idling tickets at court, and they do not care about passenger safety.
It's not built into their, as they say, it's not part of what the law talks about.
As a bus operator and a trainer, I've trained over 5,000 bus operators.
And one of the main things that I do is make sure that they follow federal, state, and 19A laws that make sure that they take care of the things that they need to do before attempting to move their vehicle.
Vehicles will not move with low air.
So there are a lot of things that are not being taken into consideration when you go to the idling court and the citizens have no clue.
And one of the things, I'm going to say this real quick, one of the things.
things I'm offering is to put city council members, DEP members, OSTAFF, and any other person that wants to understand truly what it takes to operate a vehicle.
I will bring a vehicle and myself as a qualified driver to personally educate you on what it's going to take.
Thank you.
Thank you.
And do we have this witness's information that we could reach out to?
I also sent you written testimony.
Oh, good.
I sent all of that information.
And yes.
Okay.
Thank you so much.
I appreciate it.
You're welcome.
