Peder Wessel proposes automated notices and video access for fleets
Wessel says he works in tech and suggests DEP could send automated email, text, or mail notices with video links as soon as complaints arrive. He argues this would reduce the year-long delay without changing the law.
Thank you.
My name is Peter Wessel.
Thank you for your time.
Thank everyone here for being patient.
I had planned a different testimony, but I want to react to some of the things I've heard over the last four hours at this point.
I keep hearing that we're saying status quo is not going to work.
And someone was asking before, well, what is broken?
And the response back was something along the line of, we asked the questions.
I don't know what's broken.
Clearly, there's too much idling happening.
I think we can all agree to that.
I heard when I listened to the respondents from the trucking and the busing industry, they clearly want to have notifications much faster.
I couldn't agree anymore.
And I think there's opportunities to improve that.
I don't think DP is here today, but maybe the feedback can be provided.
I work in tech, and at least to my knowledge, there are other agencies in the city already taking proactive action to notify participants of programs if something is wrong.
I've seen it to do it in the housing that like something has been complained about a housing lord you can get notification before they do an audit on it.
I think all the information is needed for DEP to give fast, rapid, accurate information to a respondent is in the claim that's been made by a citizen.
You have the truck.
You have the license plates.
You have the point of where it's been observed.
You have the time.
The video files are there.
You can go to the portal.
You can click it in.
I get that's hard for a respondent to do.
All that information is there.
You could send an auto message out to those who'd like.
opted in to say, hey, do you want an e-notification?
We'll send you an email, maybe an SMS, whatever you want to do.
You can get an opted-in message that's like on the day, someone here was wearing a mask saying delivery on the day, RDS.
This would be the same thing.
You get your message delivered on the day, no reminder needed.
Here's the information.
If you haven't opted in, I could imagine a world where you say, we don't know your email, we don't know your phone number, but we have your address because it's on your truck.
Send them a message in the mail.
Hey, we received this information.
If you want to know more, go in.
Then the timeline is gone.
It's no longer a year and a half until I found out.
You can take the cure.
I actually think, frankly speaking, with the information at hand,
If you just look at the amount of tickets that are happening, if you're an operator of a fleet, just ask your staff always to turn the engine off when they get to the destination.
You will have nothing in the mail, no SMS is coming.
I thank you for your time.
