Chair Riley asks if HPD and DCP have resources for 700,000-unit goal
He notes the goal is ambitious, last achieved in 1920s, asks if they considered additional resources; Garodnick says they have increased headcount and will assess needs in next budget cycle.
With the administration's recently released the final fair housing growth strategy, a plan completed pursuant to the council's 2023 framework, the goal of 700,000 new housing, that's a very, very ambitious goal.
The last time the city achieved something like that was in the 1920s.
Has HPD and DCP considered the additional resources in staffing, overall budget necessary to achieve the goals of nearly tripling our housing rate?
Just know that the last few years, I think we approved roughly about 80,000 units of housing.
So to get to 700,000 is extremely ambitious.
So have you guys took all that into consideration?
Sure.
We have our work cut out for us, for sure.
I know as part of the Fair Housing Growth Strategy, our first step is really being able to realize the commitment of 200,000 affordable units as outlined in block by block.
As noted, we've had an increase in headcount in this last fiscal year in order to achieve that goal, and we will continue to assess our need as we move into the next budget cycle.
Okay.
