Council Member Santosuosso asks about transit-oriented development and R train investments
She asks what capital investments are planned for TOD, especially with the R train, and if there's a role for council; Garodnick says they are in early conversations with MTA and welcome partnership.
And then my last question is around sort of transit-oriented development.
One of the reasons I'm trying to pursue the triangle rezoning is because it's so perfectly situated between two
to train stops, right?
86Th Street and 95th Street.
The trouble is that if you've ever taken the R train before, you will never want to take the R train again.
And so my thinking is, you know, it's one thing to talk about capital planning as far as city infrastructure that we fund and that we have control over.
But it's quite another to talk about largely state-funded capital improvements, which in this case would be the R train and everything that it would take to get it to be a train that is a dignified option for everybody in southern Brooklyn.
So what capital...
Investments and planning are you thinking about specifically in transit oriented developments particularly if we're thinking about adding thousands of new residents within one to two train stops and thank you for your time thank you for that question so as we are
assessing and sort of developing a citywide transit oriented development proposal we've also have started early conversations with the mta as well to understand i know that they just released their capital plan a plan to bring
mta assets to a grade of and mta assets to a state of good repair which is really exciting.
And so we are in those conversations to also figure out where there's alignment between housing.
growth and investment.
We have tools like zoning for accessibility as well too, although I know the 86th Street station is accessible, which is great.
And some of the other, exactly, I know your district very well and also that you have accessible stations, which is really fantastic.
But we also are looking at other ways that we can utilize that program to support other types of infrastructure investment in transit that is as substantive and critical to what riders experience.
And I would just say if there's a role for the council to play or those of us in the bottom 12 to play where we are advocating with our state partners to get some kind of coordinated focus on these transit-oriented areas and developments, then I would love to play a part in that.
And we welcome your partnership.
And, again, we're still in early days, but we look forward to those conversations.
Absolutely.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, Council Member.
