Deputy Commissioner Sandler provides update on Spotlight on the Bronx
He says they are kicking off the initiative, adding Community District 2, focusing on healthy homes, public spaces around affordable housing, and will start community board and council conversations later this year.
And then spotlight on the Bronx.
We're very excited to be kicking this off and focusing on quality of life and health in the South Bronx and the Northwest Bronx.
I'm happy to also note that we're going to add Community District 2 to that list of many community districts, which shares many of the characteristics of the other communities there.
We've started conversations with our interagency's partners.
We do see core partners at the Department of Health.
We're really focusing on healthy homes and how the housing stock in this community is impacting economic outcomes and health.
We're also working closely with the mayor's office to protect tenants, the mayor's office of community safety, and the New York City Housing Authority.
We started scoping out what this looks like, but really what we want to do is focus on not creating new units, but creating quality of life.
And so we're going to be focused on conditions inside of homes, combining enforcement and investments in healthy homes.
And then we're going to be focused on public spaces, especially focused around the public spaces.
around existing affordable housing.
We'll say that broadly, that's HPD supported affordable housing, NYCHA, or rent stabilized housing.
There's large concentrations of this housing stock in these community districts, and what we hear from residents of these
buildings that we've supported through our programs is that the quality of life that they're receiving after moving into affordable housing is lagging.
And so we want to focus on public space maintenance, public space cleanliness, safety around affordable housing assets, and we'll be working with the various agencies, community partners, and landlords to achieve that and
want to start kicking off community board conversations, council member conversations, hopefully later this year.
Thank you, Chair.
Thank you.
