Patricia Legate testifies on housing fraud and voucher issues
She describes losing her home to fraud, being injured, and discovering that her rental property is owned by NYCHA but stolen; Council Staff says they will connect her with assistance.
Good afternoon.
I'm here on a very important matter.
My life almost was taken from me due to a fraud that I discovered in where I live, which is Rosedale.
I lost my house.
My house was taken from me, fraud deed in 2019.
I went and...
I rent an apartment, a three-bedroom to put me and my children.
The landlord, when I rent the place, he mentioned to me that I will have to fix the property with my money to move in.
So I was so disturbed by it, but I needed a place to stay because I become homeless with my kids.
I fixed the property.
And with my money, even appliances, I put all the appliances that was, my house was taken into the apartment and I move in.
As I move in,
I was hurt.
By an individual and I have 20 screws in my back.
I am a nurse and I couldn't work anymore.
I was given a voucher by, a Section 8 voucher by the Supreme Court.
I spent one year in the hospital to recover and two years on a chair.
Now, being in this house, I find out that this landlord really is not the landlord.
The property is stolen.
The property is owned by the city, by NACHA.
The property has been stolen since 1974.
And come to find out, with my investigation,
come to find out not only my property that I am in right now is stolen in Rosedale, there is a 150 house to 200 house
is taken by NACHA and the city does not know.
What they're doing is put people with vulture
take people from a that in hotel and put in those property to collect the rent to get government
money and NACHA employees own those property.
And I've been targeted, they tried to burn my house with me and my children in it 10 months ago.
So, Ms.
Patricia, I don't want to make less of what you're saying here today.
Yes.
But this hearing is strictly focused on the block-by-block proposal that the mayor put out.
Yes.
If you want, you could just wait for me after, and we'll figure out a way to connect you to the appropriate council members for you to get some help regarding your issue.
Yes.
Okay.
And, you know, as you said, you know, affordable houses.
And I asked them to transfer my voucher.
They have so much affordable houses and none of them is affordable.
Okay.
So when we're done with the hearing, we'll connect with you and see how we could connect you to some assistance.
All right.
Thank you for listening to me.
John.
No, of course.
Of course.
I'm sorry you're going through that as well.
Yes.
Thank you.
Go ahead, John.
