Sanchez asks DOB to reconcile 160K vs 415K inspection counts
Sanchez thanks Tigani and asks him to explain the difference between roughly 160,000 enforcement inspections and the 415,481 total inspections in FY2026 from the MMR; Shamash clarifies the total includes development inspections for job closeouts and plumbing and electrical sign-offs.
All right.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Commissioner.
I'm a fan of the long testimony.
I'm sorry, public, if you're not.
I'd like to also acknowledge that we're joined by Councilmember Susan Schwing and Councilmember Felice.
Oh, you snuck in.
Okay.
Good to see you, council members.
Um,
Okay, so I will be signing up for the My Buildings newsletter.
And my first question, I just want to start with a clarification question here.
So thank you for the breakdown between the number of inspections that have been happening reactively versus proactively.
I don't know if you saw my cheer at the increasing percentage that is proactive, although you did say that it causes a lot more work.
That's okay.
We can talk about that.
Where's my question number zero?
So my question number zero is, I just want to make sure we're talking about the same number.
So for calendar year 2026, for instance, you cite 109,793 reactive inspections, 54,000.
226 proactive inspection, you know, for a total of call it 160 odd thousand.
But we're looking at numbers more at the scale of 400,000 inspections annually happening.
So, for instance, in our report, we say that fiscal year 2026, DOB completed 400 and
15,481 inspections.
This is being pulled from the MMR.
Can you just help us understand the difference there, 160,000 versus 415,000?
The total number of inspections includes all the development inspections that we do on
the closeout of jobs, signing off plumbing and electrical applications, and not just the enforcement inspections that we're talking about with the proactive and reactive numbers that the Commissioner mentioned.
Okay, excellent.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Deputy Commissioner.
