Tigani announces Mayor's Committee on Construction Safety
Tigani announces DOB is convening the Mayor's Committee on Construction Safety, a housing plan recommendation, with invitations sent this week and a first meeting expected in November, to examine root causes of injuries, evaluate enforcement tools, and address accountability gaps and extreme weather safety.
The department is always looking for ways to modernize and facilitate safer construction in the city.
I am proud to say that in partnership with the mayor's office, we are convening the Mayor's Committee on Construction Safety,
one of the key recommendations and actions in the housing plan, as part of a broader effort to address injuries and fatalities across New York City's construction industry.
Invitations to the first committee meeting were sent out this week, and the committee is expected to convene in November.
This effort will bring together labor representatives, workers, industry experts, and senior city officials to examine
systematic safety challenges and recommend reforms, which may include legislative reforms that we would work on with the council.
The committee's mandate includes identifying the root causes of persistent construction injuries and fatalities,
evaluating current enforcement tools, and identifying gaps in accountability, particularly where contractors repeatedly violate safe standards.
safety standards.
The committee will also assess how emerging technologies can help reduce hazardous tasks and protect workers in extreme weather conditions, which was the focus of the Mayor's Executive Order 17 issued earlier this year.
Through this work, the committee aims to strengthen safety practices while supporting the city's ongoing housing and broader development goals.
Chair Sanchez, we look forward to your participation on the committee.
