Hudson asks Russell how veterans are identified at intake
Hudson asks how veterans who do not initially disclose are identified; Russell says veterans self-report at intake, can disclose later, and DHS asks if they wish to identify and transfers single men to Borden if desired.
How are veterans identified when they enter the shelter system, particularly those who do not initially disclose their military service?
Yeah, thank you.
I'm going to turn it over to the deputy commissioner to walk through that.
Thank you.
So our veterans self-report at the point of intake.
So we have several intake sites, as Commissioner Adams had mentioned, for adult families, families with children and single adults.
So our veterans do self-report their veteran status at the intake.
However, if a veteran chooses not to disclose at the point of intake,
And however, they disclose throughout their shelter stay once they arrive to their program shelter.
And after meeting with their case manager or someone on staff, they share that they are a veteran.
We do engage and ask whether or not they wish to identify as a veteran so we can identify them in our system as such.
If they agree to do so, if it's a single male, then again, we will transfer that person to Borden or again, wherever shelter they wish to be placed at.
So we do continue to have conversations with our veterans at the point of intake and even while in shelter.
