Council Member Farah Louis speaks on gender-based violence and rent exemptions
Council Member Farah Louis speaks in support of Intro 296 to improve coordination of gender-based violence data and Intro 978 to raise the SCRI/DRI income limit to $75,000, sharing the story of Nathalie Ramirez.
Council Member Farrah Lewis, followed by Marte.
Thank you, Mr.
Majority Leader.
Good afternoon.
Good afternoon, everyone.
Today we vote on two bills that are about more than policy.
They are about protecting New Yorkers.
Think of Nathalie Ramirez, a 23-year-old mother who reportedly was pushed from her 15th floor balcony by a former partner.
Her story reminds us that leaving an abusive relationship does not always mean the danger is over.
Intro 296 will help the city better coordinate gender-based violence data, identify gaps, and strengthen prevention so we can intervene before tragedy strikes.
Now think of the senior or disabled New Yorker who has spent years building a life and community in New York only to struggle to afford the home they have lived in for decades.
Intro 978 raises the income eligibility limit for scree and dree from $50,000 to $75,000, helping more eligible older adults and disabled New Yorkers remain in their homes to age with dignity.
These bills share one purpose, protecting New Yorkers before they fall into the cracks.
I urge my colleagues to vote on these bills.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Councillor Marte, followed by Marano.
