Council Member Santosuosso congratulates Nurse on COPA
Council Member Kayla Santosuosso congratulates Council Member Nurse on passing COPA, rebutting claims that it ends private property ownership. She says COPA is a crucial tool for preserving affordable housing.
Permission to explain my vote?
Permission granted.
Thank you, Majority Leader.
I just want to take a few moments to congratulate our fearless leader in the Progressive Caucus, Councilmember Sandy Nurse, on her passing of COPA today, a bill that has withstood
lies and fear-mongering, some of which I have heard repeated again in this chamber.
This bill does not end private property ownership.
This bill is not an attack on homeownership.
This bill is one of the few tools that seriously advances affordable housing preservation in a moment when we are simply just
serious about building and not looking enough at building the existing, at preserving the existing affordable housing stock that we have.
I want to commend Councilmember Nurse and all of the advocates on their fierce commitment to this bill and seeing this through to the finish line, bringing in as many people as they could in the process,
withstanding all the critiques, tweaking it to a workable bill.
And this is the kind of leadership that we need.
And the fact that we are here and finally voting on this is a testament to that persistence and to staying focused on legislation that will actually make a difference in working people's lives.
So thank you so much, and I vote aye on all.
Thank you.
