New York City Council · Oct 22, 2026 · starts 2:06:11 · 43 sec

Council Member Althea Stevens votes in support of Intro 943A but calls out unacceptable harassment and racist rhetoric from some advocates. She urges them to bring the same energy to fighting for black and brown communities.

Althea V. Stevens

Permission to explain my vote.

Council Staff

Permission granted.

Althea V. Stevens

Although I will be voting in support of 943A, I would be remiss if I didn't call out some of the unacceptable behavior of some of the advocates who resorted to harassment, hateful and racist rhetoric.

Althea V. Stevens

Advocates should never come at the expense of someone else's dignity.

Althea V. Stevens

Now that we are moving this bill forward, I hope that they bring the same energy and passion and commitment to fighting for black and brown communities who deserve the same level of advocacy, attention, and support.

Althea V. Stevens

Our community deserves nothing less.

Althea V. Stevens

I also would like to give a special shout out to Sandy Nurse, who got a very tough bill across the finish line.

Althea V. Stevens

And if someone was going to do it, we know it would be her.

Althea V. Stevens

So shout out to you for doing the hard work.

Althea V. Stevens

Thank you.

Council Staff

Thank you.
