Chair asks about academy structure; Torres explains three phases and field training
Brooks-Powers asks how the academy is structured between classroom and field training and how DOP arrived at its length. Director of Training Jason Torres says the academy has three phases, with field training and hands-on training in later stages after state and regulatory requirements.
For the academy, how is the academy currently structured between classroom and field training?
How did the department arrive at the length of the training?
I know in the testimony it was stated that it's following the state guidance, but just wanting to understand that a little bit better as well.
Good morning, council members.
Thank you for that question.
Sorry, I don't think you were smiling.
My apologies.
Jason Torres, director of training.
My mom, I swear you in.
Mr.
Torres, do you affirm to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and to answer, thank you, and to answer council member questions honestly?
I do.
All right, thank you.
Now you may continue.
Good morning again, Councilman.
Good morning.
Jason Torres, Director of Training.
So our approach to this has been strategically optimized from 5.1 to 3.5 months.
They go through several phases.
There are three phases that they have, phase one, phase two, phase three of the academy.
A portion of that, which would be the latter stages of the academy, is where they get field training.
They also get hands-on training as well.
So once they complete their state and regulatory requirements, then they move on to different phases.
The last phase would be inclusive of that.
