Gaston details contraband searches, scanners, and staffing hires
Gaston says ACS has increased searches, procured handheld and mobile x-ray scanners, and added entrance and exit scanning technology. She says ACS has hired 166 youth development specialists and 52 special officers, and expanded crisis intervention and threat assessment training.
ACS is committed to the safety and security of both youth and staff.
Preventing, identifying, and removing contraband is an essential piece to safety.
We increased the number and frequency of searches and have procured cutting-edge handheld and mobile x-ray scanners to assist in finding any contraband hidden in opaque surfaces or items.
We have added new scanning technology at the entrances and exits.
As well as for use throughout the facility.
We've implemented new protocols to ensure this equipment is utilized safely and consistently.
ACS is working closely with OMB to ensure our facilities are sufficiently staffed.
Since the start of the Momdani administration, we have hired many new staff for detention, including 166 YDS, Youth Development Specialists, and 52 Special Officers.
ACS is focused on recruiting a workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
Recruitment starts with promoting ACS civil service careers through targeted outreach at educational institutions, community-based organizations, and job fairs.
Over the past year, ACS has participated in more than 110 hiring and recruitment events.
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting staff, we've expanded access to practical skills-based training.
To date, 67 staff members have participated in advanced crisis intervention training, which strengthens their verbal de-escalation skills, crisis communication, and incident management skills.
An additional 19 staff participated in the Vigilance Threat Assessment and Crisis Communication Training, which provides structured tools for assessing higher risk situations, making sound
and defensible decisions, and intervening safely when needed.
Additional training sessions are planned.
