Q&A

Stevens asks about class suspensions and school-movement staffing

New York City Council · Oct 27, 2026 · starts 2:42:19 · 54 sec

Stevens asks about class suspensions and staffing for moving youth to school. Administration witnesses say classes are not stopped facility-wide, though individual classes may be paused, and ACS has specialized uniform staff to escort youth to classrooms.

Althea V. Stevens

I just have a point of clarity.

Althea V. Stevens

So you guys, so it was, I know Councilman Joseph just asked about classes being suspended or canceled, and it's your understanding that that doesn't happen or that does happen?

Unidentified speaker

It has not happened facility-wide.

Althea V. Stevens

So it happens on an individual basis?

Unidentified speaker

It may happen that a particular class needs to be stopped for a particular time on a day, on a particular day.

Althea V. Stevens

How often is that happening?

Unidentified speaker

Not that often.

Althea V. Stevens

Because I'm, again, in real time.

Althea V. Stevens

I'm getting texts from your staff saying that classes are often canceled or suspended and then packets are handed out on the hall to the young people.

Althea V. Stevens

So I was in a real time.

Althea V. Stevens

And they also wanted me to say that they don't have adequate staffing ratios with the movement of young people across to classes.
