Stevens presses administration on crisis urgency and revoked waiver
Stevens says the situation does not feel treated like a crisis, noting the September 15 announcement and November program start dates. She asks whether the state waiver was revoked so youth can no longer sleep in unconventional areas; Gaston says it is absolutely a crisis.
I'm going to pass it over to the public advocate, but I have a question because I just, even with some of the timelines, I'm just confused.
Is this not a crisis that we have so many young people in secure detention?
Because it doesn't feel that way.
Because this announcement was on the 15th.
We're talking about the community partnership stuff happening in November, and it just seems very much like not a crisis, especially when...
The waiver is revoked from the state, correct?
Because the waiver from the state is removed, so kids aren't allowed to sleep in unconventional areas anymore, correct?
So first of all, it absolutely is a crisis.
And I think what you hear and will continue to hear is the variety of things that we are putting in place and investing in across the continuum.
Prevention efforts to serve kids in the community as well as the ability for our probation partners to have
in community monitoring and the the work with the the court system and our other partners across that the
and i hear you but this isn't new when the administration came in this was happening and so why is it now that it's a crisis because it's the waiver was revoked because i'm confused and that's why i'm frustrated because this isn't a new issue
and it's coming off as if this is something that's new and I've been ringing the alarm for three years so I'm frustrated because I'm sitting here and we're talking about
plans that we're implementing now when this has not been a priority since January, as it should have been, like we've been calling for.
So I'm just a little frustrated with, like, it doesn't feel like a sense of urgency.
I'm going to pass it to Public Advocate so he can ask.
His questions, because I did say I was going to let my colleagues go first, so I'm going to shut up again.
Sorry.
No, I appreciate your questions and your passion with this.
It's welcome.
Thank you.
Thank you, Commissioner and et al.
