Q&A

Chair asks about social workers/nurses and CUNY

New York City Council · Oct 27, 2026 · starts 0:50:17 · 38 sec

Won notes public shortages of social workers and nurses and asks about city partnerships with CUNY to help people finish education. Harry says NYC Talent focuses on apprenticeships and increasing opportunities beyond community hiring.

Julie Won

Okay, because it's been public in the news how we're short in social workers and nurses, especially in the health care sector.

Julie Won

So are there any efforts from the city of New York in partnership with CUNYs to make sure that there are programs to allow people to finish their education, especially since the federal government has declassified them as public servants?

Douglas Harry

Yeah, so that is something that, like I said, beyond community hiring that our office is always focused on of trying to increase opportunities, help make sure that we are connecting more New Yorkers and improving job quality and things like that through apprenticeships.

Douglas Harry

And so that is something that we are focused on.
