Wong asks incentive for vendors
Wong asks what incentive vendors have to participate in community hiring. Harry says vendors receiving city contracts have a responsibility to hire from the workforce system, and the city offers free workforce services and access to talent.
Yeah, maybe I'm confused of you.
So what is the incentive for becoming a vendor that's doing community hires?
Like, why bother?
So I think there's two things that I think are relevant here.
One is we believe that there's a lot of city dollars that are being invested and that city vendors
have a responsibility to, if they're getting these contracts, right, and we're talking about the billions of dollars every year, we want those vendors to have an obligation to really...
Hire from the workforce system.
In terms of an incentive, I think that's incumbent upon the city to really make sure that we are helping serve them, right?
And so that's one of the things that certainly over time we want to work with the vendors to make sure that the city's workforce system is meeting their hiring needs.
And if that means
that meeting their hiring needs and we can place someone today, great, fantastic, we want to do that.
But that also may mean working with particular vendors or working with particular industries that have not historically worked with the public workforce system to help make sure that the city's workforce system are meeting those employers'needs.
And so the incentive is we have a lot of talent here in New York City, and talent is not limited by...
Factors of income, right?
So we want them to connect to that talent, and we want to connect the talent to these job opportunities.
So the incentive of working with the public workforce system is that there's an enormous amount of talent that can fill the needs of these employers, and there are free services to these businesses, right?
They don't have to pay to go and work with.
The Workforce One centers.
Those are free services that are offered to those businesses to help fill their hiring needs.
