Council Member Wong questions NYPD on 104th Precinct collision response
Council Member Wong describes a 12-year-old severely injured at 75th Avenue and 60th Lane and criticizes the 104th Precinct for incomplete collision reports and lack of basic police work. He asks Chief Obey to speak with precinct commanders about evidence gathering, accurate reports, and highway assistance.
Thank you, Chair.
My questions is to Chief Obey and Chief O'Brien.
Chiefs, I thank you both for your help with the traffic enforcement in my district and for getting the collision investigation squad involved in the Glendale case.
You've both been responsive, and I really, really appreciate it.
But I'm very concerned and frustrated with my prison, the 104th.
And as you know, two weeks ago, a 12-year-old child was severely injured at the corner of 75th Avenue and 60th Lane.
He was hit by a motor vehicle speeding.
And what we saw from the videos, which my office had to collect, not the precinct, the driver was at best running a yellow light or at worst going through a red light.
Basic police work was not done.
The report was completed incorrectly with omissions and errors and has since been amended.
and it still needs to be corrected.
And that is unacceptable.
And my office have to call your office to get additional help with the prison and should have been taking that initiative itself.
Frankly, I find it unacceptable.
Of the actions or lack of response from the 104th Precinct.
And I appreciate being able to reach both of you, but families should not need their council members to call a chief to get the precinct to do their job.
My question to Chief Obey is, could you speak directly with precinct commanding officers about what is expected when someone is seriously injured, nearly killed in this case, especially a 12-year-old child?
I think a conversation about gathering evidence, preparing accurate reports, and knowing when to request highway assistance would be helpful.
Please answer that.
Thank you.
I can't speak to the particular case you referenced, but I can tell you that we do have a forum.
So it's called Traffic Stat, where we address concerns like this.
And I've also spoken to Chief Green and, you know, we work very closely with the borough.
So it is something that we take seriously and will continue to address.
