Yadira Sanchez, Los Deliveristas Unidos, supports Intro 613
Yadira Sanchez, Organizing Director of Los Deliveristas Unidos, supports Intro 613 and says delivery workers face serious risks, especially where protected bike lanes are missing or blocked. She calls for protected bike lanes, secure parking, and charging infrastructure with the same urgency as enforcement and warns increased police interactions can harm immigrant workers.
Good afternoon, Majority Leader Abreu and members of the committee.
Thank you for the opportunity to testify.
My name is Yadira Sanchez, Organizing Director of Los Deliveristas Unidos.
We support Intero 0613 to accelerate the installation and protected bike lanes and make our streets safer for everyone.
Delivery workers face serious risks every day.
Many have been injured or killed by cars, especially where protected bike lanes are missing or blocked by parked vehicles.
Workers should not have to choose between risking their lives in traffic or being blamed to unsafe streets.
Street safety is a top priority for delivery workers.
We need protected bike lanes, secure bike parking, and safe e-bike charging infrastructure.
We urge the council to invest in these solutions with the same urgency it brings to enforcement.
Increased police enforcement.
Can also have devastating consequences.
Just last week, actually a couple of days ago, a delivery worker was arrested after a traffic stop for an alleged wrong turn.
The judge dismissed the case, yet the worker was detained by ICE.
This is why we are concerned about
policies that increase police interactions with immigrant workers.
We urge the council to listen directly to delivery workers and address the root causes of unsafe streets.
Workers have been here to share their experiences, and we invite you, Majority Leader Abreu, and the entire community to spend a day making deliveries with them so you can understand what they're going through.
Thank you so much.
We look forward to continue working with you all together and build safer streets for delivery workers and for New Yorkers.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
