Banks asks about remediation and possible closures at Cypress Houses
Banks asks about remediation at centers, mentioning Cypress Houses and possible mold or asbestos remediation. Trimble says NYCHA is working on lead abatement at daycare centers. She says priority is to maintain center operations during repairs, but life-health-safety issues like asbestos or lead may require closure and relocation.
I know recently there's been some remediation that's been done to some of the centers,
which has caused some of them operations to be moved or closed to some degree.
Is there any update on the amount of centers that have received a remediation?
We are currently working on lead abatement at our daycare centers.
Right.
And I don't know if that's what you're referring to when you say remediation.
Well, I know there was a, I know at Cypress Houses, I know there was a concern, and I think I had spoken to...
Brian about the remediation that was needed to be done at that particular center.
I think it was mold remediation or asbestos remediation.
I forget exactly which one.
But there was a concern about a possible closure because of the need to remediate.
So our priority is always...
to maintain center operations while we're doing repairs.
And we work to make sure that can be done safely.
If for some reason the work is extensive or if it has a life health safety component like asbestos or lead, then we may have to close down programming for the time of the repair and relocate programming somewhere else.
And we'll work with NYC Aging and our partners and the providers to make that happen.
If it is a larger issue, like we had at, let's say, Latimer Gardens, where we're not able, it's not about a repair, it's about a major capital project, then we have to do a permanent shutdown.
