Chair Brooks-Powers questions nursery location and capacity
Brooks-Powers asks where the nursery is located and its capacity. Greysock says it is at Rosie's with maximum occupancy of about 15 rooms for mothers and children, and mothers can keep infants overnight.
Going over to the nursery program.
Where is the nursery located within the Department of Correction system?
Thank you for your question.
The nursery is located within the Rose M.
Singh Center.
And how many beds and cribs are available, and what is the maximum occupancy?
The maximum occupancy is about 15.
15 rooms for a mom and also children.
Are mothers able to keep their infants with them throughout the day and overnight?
Yes, they are.
What is the current operational status of the Department of Correction nursery program?
Thank you for your question.
We are proud to offer one of the country's oldest correctional nurseries.
So the nursery is fully operational.
We have a mom currently inside the program.
We have a wonderful partnership with Caribbean Women's Health Association, as I mentioned earlier, to provide doula services and help mom around newborn care, emotional support, and recovery after childbirth.
We also have wonderful partnerships with our children, which provides reentry support inside the nursery.
And, you know, it's really designed to look and feel like a nursery.
There are cribs and children's toys and books and a rocking chair for the mom.
It's really kind of designed to support the care of the mom and the child.
And actually last year,
completely renovated the nursery and purchased all new furniture, new cribs, new toys, new books.
We painted the walls, we did the floors, all with the goal of making sure that it's a welcoming and warm environment for the mom and the baby.
