Council Member Brewer questions school transfers and absenteeism
Brewer raises IEP students commuting from Rockaway to Manhattan and asks if DHS tracks transfers for school issues. Fellini says DHS does track transfer requests.
The reason I also ask is not only if you're 10 and you have an IEP, that's as important, in my opinion, as under three or three or younger.
So those are the kinds of data I would like to see.
I know people now who are commuting from Rockaway to Manhattan because that's the only school that takes a child with the IEP.
They're always late.
Always.
And the buses.
I'm already dealing with buses.
We're sitting here that are always late.
So I have to say I think it's correct that kids in foster care and shelter are driving up the absentee rate for the Department of Education.
And they're perhaps the ones who need the education the most.
And so it just has to be addressed one way or the other.
Yes, I know there wasn't exactly a question there, but if I may, we are working hard with the New York City Public Schools on attendance.
We're doing door knocking for kids who have missed the first bits of school.
We're doing on-grounds operational.
approach to make sure that transportation is in place.
So we are, we, this is.
High priority.
Do you keep track of those who might be asking for a transfer during the year because of school issues or other kinds of issues?
Keep track of that?
We do.
We do.
Okay.
And I could go on, but go ahead.
Go to somebody else.
I know you could, and I'm happy to add you to round two, but I am going to move along.
