Q&A

Narcisse and Long debate colonoscopy versus FIT test

New York City Council · Oct 28, 2026 · starts 0:39:29 · 55 sec

Narcisse questions why GI isn't among the top services given rising colon cancer rates. Long explains H&H now uses annual FIT tests instead of routine colonoscopies, reserving colonoscopies for patients with abnormal tests or family history.

Mercedes Narcisse

I will agree and not agree too much on that because the fact is the nurse now going to be not against the doctor, but I will say that

Mercedes Narcisse

for a person that have history, I will definitely let them go on their colonoscopy.

Mercedes Narcisse

I think it's more.

Mercedes Narcisse

So we on the same page on that?

Mercedes Narcisse

Yes.

Dr. Ted Long

If you have an abnormal test in the past or a strong family history, you do need to still get your colonoscopy.

Dr. Ted Long

For people that don't fall into those two categories, you're eligible for this new test, which fortunately is many people.

Dr. Ted Long

And just to also agree with you, one of the things that I'm proudest of that has enabled all of this to work is we have, I think, one of the best primary care staffing models with ratios for all of the nurses who we can't do anything without that are embedded in each of our primary care teams across our whole system.

Dr. Ted Long

We could not do hardly anything we've talked about if we didn't have the right team members.

Dr. Ted Long

We all work together.

Mercedes Narcisse

I love that.

Mercedes Narcisse

Thank you.
