Narcisse asks which services NYC Care members use most. Long lists OB/GYN, eye care, dental, cardiology, and podiatry behind primary care, and discusses GI care and colon cancer screening.

Mercedes Narcisse

What services are most frequently utilized by New York City Care members, including primary care, specialty care, behavioral health services, prescription medications, and preventive care?

Dr. Ted Long

So the top five that go behind primary care, which is the gateway to everything.

Mercedes Narcisse

The gateway, okay.

Dr. Ted Long

OBGYN, eye care.

Mercedes Narcisse

OBGYN?

Dr. Ted Long

Yep.

Mercedes Narcisse

Okay.

Dr. Ted Long

OBGYN, eye care, dental care, cardiology care, and podiatry care.

Mercedes Narcisse

Not bad.

Mercedes Narcisse

What happened to the GI?

Mercedes Narcisse

Because we know we have an increase in colon cancer.

Mercedes Narcisse

That's why I'm saying it.

Mercedes Narcisse

I'm not saying it has a joke because there's so many people under.

Dr. Ted Long

If we could stay there for a second, it's actually a really good question we think a lot about.

Dr. Ted Long

So it used to be that GI was one of the services where there was a bottleneck because we were following what we call the USPSTF preventive services guidelines where you need a colonoscopy every 10 years.

Dr. Ted Long

What we do today, though, which is way more efficient and effective, is we could do an annual test where you don't have to drink the liquid, get put to sleep, go through the colonoscopy, and just do what's called a fit test.

Dr. Ted Long

And I talk to my patients about this when I'm in clinic every week.

Dr. Ted Long

All they have to do is just do a quick test once a year, and that's in lieu of.

Dr. Ted Long

of a colonoscopy.

Dr. Ted Long

But what that does is, they would have otherwise been waiting in the queue to see a gastroenterologist to get the colonoscopy.

Dr. Ted Long

So by doing things differently with the technology that's being developed out there, we've been able to save our gastroenterologists, lowering their wait times for things that really need to go to them, and we're able to do more in primary care.

Dr. Jonathan Jimenez

And patients prefer this so much more.

Dr. Jonathan Jimenez

You don't have to miss a day of work.

Dr. Jonathan Jimenez

You don't have to get someone to take care of you that day.

Dr. Jonathan Jimenez

It's way better, and it's increased our screening rates.
