Chair Krishnan on forfeiture fund depletion timeline of 2-3 years

New York City Council · Jun 2, 2026 · starts 0:44:59 · 56 sec

Krishnan asks when forfeiture funds will run out. Shahada estimates 2-3 years at the current spend rate, after which DOI would be left with only a few hundred thousand dollars to run the entire agency, with no forfeiture supplement available.

Shekar Krishnan

And if that's the case, at what point do you foresee the asset forfeiture funding running out completely?

Shekar Krishnan

Because as I understand it, it's coming from one specific case from...

Shekar Krishnan

many years ago?

Nadia Shihata

If we continue with the current rate of spend, it's approximately two years at the very outset three years, but in the two to three year range.

Shekar Krishnan

So in two years, DOI would not have asset forfeiture funding to supplement and support its core operations?

Nadia Shihata

Based on the current amount of asset forfeiture funds we have, yes.

Shekar Krishnan

And all you'd have left at that point is the several hundred thousand, assuming nothing changes, all you'd have left to run an entire agency in two years would be the several hundred thousand dollars in funding that you have left after fundamental payments like rent and things like that.

Shekar Krishnan

Am I right?

Nadia Shihata

That's correct.
