New York City Council · Aug 12, 2026 · starts 1:17:41 · 2 min 24 sec

Wang, a Flushing resident of 10 years with two children, describes rising rents making it harder for working families to stay. He supports the 158th Street and Northern Boulevard project, calling it a positive step toward providing affordable housing for middle-class families in the community.

Hi, good afternoon everyone.

My name is Cindy.

When I first came to the States 16 years ago, I would never believe in a world where you are paying $3,000 up a month for a three-bedroom in a flashing area would be considered normal.

Today, the rent is totally out of reach, while many people's income has been impacted, especially after the pandemic.

I can speak for my job, where a lot of jobs have been outsourced to another country or impacted by the AI.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

So for us, many of us need to take the pickup in order to find another job.

Also, I do have friends still live in the basement.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

Not many people talk about this, but it does exist.

This tells the, this says the housing crisis in Flushing area.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

Flushing changed, it's not like a decade ago.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

So my parents live

by the Casino Boulevard in Flushing, by the Sanford Avenue, which is like 15 minutes walk from this new project.

So I would like to stay in this community to take care of them as they're getting older.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

I don't want to leave.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

I'm also concerned about my next generation.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

How about my children?

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

How can a young person or new graduate starting out a normal salary to afford to be able to buy a house?

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

The flashing one family, two family house easily reach over one million, like,

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

close to two millions.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

So when they grow up, I want them to be able to afford to live in this Chinese American community where they were raised.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

So I personally am thinking that we need more housing options besides one family of two families.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

I strongly urge you to support this housing project with affordable rental issues.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

Please wrap up.

Member of the Public - Cindy Wong

Thank you.
