I am honored to introduce, in collaboration with public advocate Jumaane Williams, a resolution calling on the New York State Legislature to pass and the governor to sign Daniel's Law.
Daniel's Law would ensure that every locality in our state has a plan and resources in place for responding to mental health-related emergencies in a sensitive, constructive manner informed by modern advances in and understandings of mental health care.
When worried families seek support for a loved one undergoing a mental health crisis, they hope that person will be treated with care and dignity.
Unfortunately, too often, the tragedy deepens from there.
According to the Mayor's Office of Community Mental Health, in the past eight years, NYPD officers have fatally shot at least 20 individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
There has to be a better, more humane way to respond to our loved ones in crisis.
Daniel's Law will ensure compassionate crisis response in every community, as well as a focus on preventative mental health care.
