Public: Dan Miller supports Mangin, urging council to consider non-local impacts
Miller, testifying as a private citizen, notes the city needs 70,000 units per year but produces 20,000-30,000. He argues that when the process fails this direly, ordinary New Yorkers pay the price, and urges council to consider impacts on people who aren't local but want to live in New York.
Hi, my name is Dan Miller.
I'm testifying just as a private citizen in support of Mr.
Mangin's nomination.
The council's own required report has found that the city needs to produce about 70,000 units per year.
We're currently averaging somewhere from 20 to 30.
When the process is failing at this level, when we have a shortage this dire, ordinary New Yorkers like myself are the ones who pay the price.
And acknowledging that failure
does not and should not disqualify a candidate from serving in a position which they're eminently qualified to do so.
Mr.
Manchin is a brilliant writer and a strong advocate for building more homes, and he's
extremely qualified to serve in this role.
And while local control is important, I want to urge members of the council to also consider the impact of housing decisions on people who aren't local.
People who, when I moved into my current apartment,
I didn't just look for homes in one neighborhood.
I looked all over.
over the city, Astoria, Crown Heights, Bushwick, because I wanted to be in New York.
There are many people across the nation who want to be in New York and can't because we don't build enough.
Our current process doesn't let us build enough.
It's not working.
John Mangin understands that, and I hope that you won't hold that against him.
Thank you.
