Hanif questions types of emergency calls that went unanswered
Council Member Hanif asks what types of emergencies the unanswered 911 calls were for. NYPD reports 526 callbacks were made in 24 hours, reaching 32 individuals. The issues ranged from disputes to ambulance needs, none requiring additional emergency services at contact time. Nearly 500 callers never responded.
Thank you, Chair, and thank you for joining us.
Could you share of the 911 calls that went unanswered during the outage and required callbacks, what types of emergency calls those were for?
Thank you for that question.
I will defer to my colleagues at PD.
And Councilmember, thank you for that.
My colleague Elizabeth's pulling up what we have from what we were able to learn from the callers we could connect with in the 24 hours after.
And that number of calls were how many?
Because there were a number that was all the calls that went unanswered, and then a set of numbers that were called back but answered, and some that didn't answer.
We'd love to know if those were also tried again.
Yes.
If that makes sense.
Sure.
So there were 526 calls made by the police department in the 24 hours after the outage using the numbers that were provided by the vendor.
We were able to make voice contact with 32 individuals.
That's it?
Correct.
Within that 24-hour time frame?
Yes.
Okay.
And the issues?
The issues, they ranged from dispute.
There were some...
Ambulance, like they're, they, none required additional emergency services at the time we made contact.
They had received the necessary services, but the jobs associated with those callers did range from dispute, ambulance routed to them, and
A few others.
So nearly 500 still hadn't picked up or responded.
