Williams shares community feedback on AI and urges action before it's too late
Williams shares quotes from a community forum on AI, urges using current knowledge to change course before more harm occurs, and warns that the house is already on fire regarding technology's impact on children.
In this spirit of open dialogue, when we rolled out our report, we took the opportunity to host a community forum with New Yorkers who have seen many waves of new technology in their lifetimes.
Here are just a few pieces of feedback we heard.
AI needs to be nonpolitical.
The system is designed where you find out about these things after the fact.
We are skeptical about everything.
Please support AI guidelines.
These quotes convey how ordinary, everyday New Yorkers are thinking about AI and its impact on their daily lives.
I look forward to being a partner in these discussions and helping craft and shape future legislations as it pertains to the impact of technology on our youngest children.
As I said outside, I think many of us are impacted.
I know many of us may have stayed up way too long, doom scrolling, and realized it's 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning.
Many folks can't even go to the bathroom without their phones.
But all of us learned in a way that allows us to critically think.
We are now talking about young children who have not yet got that ability to critically think.
And what would happen if we can go back with this knowledge before the social media harmed our kids, before we allowed cell phones in schools?
We'd probably do things differently.
So I'm hoping that we can use this knowledge and change now.
The house is already on fire.
It's about how long are we going to allow it to burn?
Are we going to let it burn it down, or are we going to stop it?
And, of course, your president said we don't have anything to worry about as long as we have a president that has a high IQ, which means we're all in a lot of trouble.
But even if there wasn't a president with high IQ, it cannot be left to just one person, whether it's climate change or tech.
We need to have folks who are not just focused on money, but trying to make sure we have a world.
leave my young daughter.
So thank you for this hearing and hopefully we can take this information and do better for our youngest kids.
Thank you.
