Chair Thomas-Henry questions Khan on cross-marketing of SBS services to businesses

New York City Council · Sep 16, 2026 · starts 1:16:40 · 2 min 8 sec

Thomas-Henry asks whether SBS cross-promotes its various services when a business comes in for one program. Khan confirms SBS cross-promotes all relevant services during outreach and direct interactions, noting they serve 22,000 businesses annually and many become repeat clients.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

And is all that made available to businesses when they come to SBS in general?

Shanel Thomas-Henry

Like, say I come for the commercial lease program where the representatives say, hey, when you open up, use this resource.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

This is available to you.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

So do you cross market the various resources that SBS offers from beginning to end, no matter what the client comes in for?

Haris Khan

So we cross-promote the services no matter what the

Haris Khan

small business owner came in for when they speak to our outreach team or when they speak to our NYC Business Express service team or the small business advocates that are in our agency and generally make it a practice as soon as a business owner shares.

Haris Khan

they could benefit from or they are challenged with another issue that relates to another service, we've got the resources.

Haris Khan

We've got dozens and dozens of free resources.

Haris Khan

It's just a matter of establishing that relationship.

Haris Khan

We also are protective of that relationship.

Haris Khan

We know even when we do door-to-door outreach on something as simple as the business owner bill of rights, which the mayor has, through EO18, required

Haris Khan

city agencies to start distributing at the beginning of inspections starting October 1st, even in sharing this flyer of the business owner bill of rights, as many of you are familiar with door knocking

Haris Khan

in residential buildings, it's also similar in commercial corridors where businesses may only have the attention.

Haris Khan

Of five seconds, if not less, in some of these interactions.

Haris Khan

So we want to protect them by ensuring that we're directing the most relevant message to them in that moment.

Haris Khan

But when the opening makes itself available, where they're expressing interest in potential other services or just sharing needs that they have in the city that they could benefit from,

Haris Khan

our SBS services, we would cross-promote in that moment 100%.

Haris Khan

That's the practice and helps us serve the 22,000 businesses we serve every year.

Haris Khan

And a lot of the services we provide end up being a good substantial amount of them are repeat New Yorkers, repeat small businesses that once they learn about the service, they want to...

Haris Khan

They want to use it more and promote it with the friends and family members who are also in small business community.

Shanel Thomas-Henry

Thank you.
