Amelia Walden describes court disputes, falsified vent repair, mold, and altered apartment
Amelia Walden says she is from Penn-Wortman Houses and her quality of life has suffered mentally and physically. She describes being taken to court over repairs, a bathroom vent not working for two years, a falsified HPD repair record, recurring mold, and renovation reducing her apartment space.
From Penworkman.
Ms.
Walden, you want to move that mic a little closer?
Thank you.
Can you hear me now?
We hear you loud and clear.
Okay.
I am Amelia Walden.
I'm from Penworkman Houses.
First of all,
My quality of life has really been affected mentally and physically.
First, they took me to court because I refused to let them come in my apartment and break the floors in the closet for this riser that they wanted.
The judge specifically told them to get a certified company to do the work.
Now I'm back in court again.
And for the lead and the asbestos results, I asked management many times for the results.
They refused.
So I searched around and I called Environmental Protection.
That was the only time I was able to get the results of the lead and the asbestos testing.
I'm trying to see what it is.
Management also took me to court.
They held my rent for over a year.
I didn't even know the reason why because at first when I went in a month after, they said they were processing the rent.
So I'm thinking that maybe they're backlogged.
They held my, I made my payments at the office, got my receipts.
They took them over a year and they didn't start cashing until after they took me to court in May and the court saw where they was at fault.
My bathroom vent has not been working for at least two years, and they keep sending someone in.
They clean it, and that's it.
So the last information I got from HPD,
that my complaint of the vent in the bathroom being fixed was falsified, the information that it was corrected.
To use my bathroom, to take a shower, or even to use the toilet.
You have to keep the bathroom door ajar.
My apartment has been having mold problems off and on.
This is the third time that they have had the mold in my apartment.
So with that question, I would like, if you can find out, when they say mold removal, what's the procedure for that?
Because they come in, they wipe it, and they paint it, and that's it.
That doesn't solve the problem.
Another thing with the rent.
Oh, my apartment peephole is small.
30 seconds to wrap it up.
As a senior or even a person with a disability, you cannot really see clearly who's on the other side of that door.
And management do have the problem of sending someone to your apartment with no appointment.
And I told them, do not send anyone to my apartment without an appointment.
So now slam lock is another problem.
You get locked.
That's dangerous.
If a person have a home attendant and get locked out, that person, that patient or that resident is in jeopardy of maybe dying or something until they can get into the apartment.
30 seconds.
Okay, renovation took away part of my apartment.
I have a four room, but now I have a three and a half because my kitchen space is compromised.
And I also do not have a closet, so I have my other clothing things in boxes.
So I want to know how can you address that for that whole sea line?
Where the apartment closet was downsized and management just refused to acknowledge.
Also, management, some management staff is very disrespectful.
Okay.
They need an in-service.
So the elevators are frequently out of order, and that's another problem.
Chronically, chronically outage and elevated.
Brand new elevators, right?
Okay.
Refurbished.
Refurbished.
Okay.
Thank you for your testimony.
Thank you.
Thank you.
