Encarnación asks about skilled-trade vacancies; Greene reports 44 vacancies and plaster academy
Encarnación asks how many skilled-trade vacancies NYCHA has. Greene says there are 44 vacancies among 1,750 skilled trades, with plasters the hardest to hire, prompting a plaster academy, and about 30 maintenance vacancies.
And how many job vacancies do you have in the skilled trades unit?
Thank you, Council Member, for asking.
So as of today, we only have 44 vacancies.
We have 1,750 skilled trades.
And currently, as of today, we have 44, which is one of the lowest numbers that we've had for a while.
The highest trade that we have is plasters, which is about 14 vacancies as of today.
Plasters, we've talked about it at prior council hearings.
It's a unique trade to NYCHA, the amount of plaster work that we have.
So going outside of NYCHA to find those individuals is difficult.
So that's why we started a plaster academy.
On the maintenance side, I think we have about 30 vacancies as of today.
We have 750 maintenance workers citywide and just 30.
So we're at very low vacancy rates overall.
Yeah.
And you have the budget if you had.
A line of people outside that were ready to take on that job, you have the budget to pay those people and fill those vacancies.
Yeah, we're pretty fast.
I mean, I think when I pulled the numbers in August, we had like 60 vacancies, and now it's down to 44.
It's cyclical because we just also went through what they call a skilled trade pick, where trades are moved around the city based on seniority.
It's a thing that we have with the unions contracted.
But, yeah, we're very low on vacancies, and that is also true for our caretakers, for janitorial staff as well.
So we're able to fill things very quickly for our HR department.
You're going to ask one more question.
You may.
Thank you.
