Aldebol asks about advice for candidates and expediting process
Aldebol asks what advice DCAS gives candidates facing long waits; Porter and Otar say they inform candidates of multiple pathways and immediate hire opportunities.
Thank you.
Although DCAS has several initiatives that are aimed toward recruiting high-quality candidates, such efforts can be fruitless due to the extended timeline for examination and hire, which in some cases can take well over a year.
Many applicants simply cannot wait for long.
Wait that long for a job offer.
What advice do you share for candidates who are in this difficult position and do you have suggestions for how this recruitment and hiring process can be expedited through removal of bureaucratic hurdles and what bureaucratic hurdles or barriers
can realistically be removed to make it faster.
So thank you for that.
You know, what I'll say is that we do recognize that the city's hiring process has been, you know, a point of, you know, concern for the general public and, you know, folks who may be looking for employment for some time.
And what I can say here is that, you know, we recognize that and we're.
We're, you know, in talks with our sister agencies, with labor, with the city council to develop new strategies to demystify the civil service, you know, how to engage with the civil service system overall.
And we also have the Office of Citywide Recruitment who, you know, Katie, if you want to share some of the strategies that you folks use to engage and inform.
The public about civil service.
And thank you.
One of the things that we make clear is that there's more than one way to get into city government.
We want to make sure that if somebody's taking an exam, then they're taking an exam, but they're not just waiting for the results of that.
We let them know that there are other opportunities to get immediate hire, so they can apply for open vacancies on our website.
They can participate in, you know, some of our immediate hire events that we hold.
We also, if there is somebody that's qualified for programming, our career pathway programs, and we speak to them about that.
I think one of the main things is just letting people know the different options that are available to them.
And it's not like a sit and wait.
It's like, hey, if you start the application process early, if you're in school, you are able to apply for a position or an exam before you graduate.
So we really use that form to make sure that people know what options are available to them.
