Aldebol asks about agencies being siloed in hiring
Aldebol asks if agencies are siloed; Porter confirms each agency has its own HR and DCAS supports through exams and recruitment.
Yeah, on that particular issue of it seems like the agencies are siloed when it comes to hiring.
Is that correct?
Yes, each agency is responsible.
They have their own HR departments, and they're responsible for recruiting and hiring.
And we're here to support them, you know, through examinations and, you know, other methods.
Our small but mighty Office of Citywide Recruitment.
And, you know, just helping them navigate and, you know, to help amplify immediate hiring needs they may have.
So essentially you wait for them to say, hey, we need to hire.
20 people in this hard to recruit title.
And then what, you know, what steps do you take to make sure that that happens?
So that's in some instances, there are, you know, many different ways for agencies to recruit and hire.
There are different title classifications that have different rules and regulations, but the foundation of the city's civil service system
are competitive titles that require examination.
And that's why we, you know, administer so many exams.
a year, on average about 200.
And that's the opportunity for agencies to communicate to DCAS any immediate or future hiring needs that we should be helping them to prepare for.
But in the mix of that,
If anything comes up, you know, we're always there to support them by amplifying, by, you know, even hosting special hiring events to help, you know, bring folks into a centralized location and, you know, do on the spot hiring.
So there are many different strategies that we use to support agencies, their HR shops, but exams by far is the cornerstone of the system.
