Q&A

Aldebol asks about decrease in exam applications

New York City Council · Sep 22, 2026 · starts 0:34:28 · 1 min 7 sec

Aldebol notes a drop from 166,000 to 119,117 applications; Porter attributes it to the types of exams offered, like sanitation vs. technical titles.

Shirley Aldebol

According to the recently released Mayor's Management Report, in FY26 there were 119,117 applications received for civil service

Shirley Aldebol

exams compared to 166,000 in fiscal year 25.

Shirley Aldebol

To what does DCAS attribute the decrease in applications?

Katrina Porter

So thank you for that question.

Katrina Porter

The application number is a dynamic number.

Katrina Porter

It's really based on the exams that we're offering for a particular fiscal year.

Katrina Porter

So for instance, in fiscal years when we're offering a title like sanitation worker, where we receive, you know, 150,000 applications, we'll see,

Katrina Porter

you know, an increase, that number would be higher than a year where maybe we're giving more technical titles like engineering or more specialized titles where we see smaller applicant pools.

Katrina Porter

So, you know, I can give you a more direct answer, but on...

Katrina Porter

You know, in general, that's usually why you see like the fluctuation and examination numbers.
